project engineer

Introduction

Project engineers work in all phases and stages of oil and gas exploration and production. The work environment is dynamic and involves engineering projects for offshore platforms drilling under seabed reservoirs, mobile drilling rigs, and floating production, storage and offloading facilities (FPSO). Engineering projects are carried out for onshore installations including pipelines from offshore platforms and plant facilities for the preparation of liquid products for further refining.

Employers

Project engineers are employed by different types of companies involved in oil and gas exploration and production. These companies include well known international companies licensed for oil and/or gas exploration and operating production facilities. Large contractors providing operation and maintenance services to the operating companies also employ project engineers, as do drilling companies, FPSO operators, engineering consultancies, and service companies.

Tasks

The project engineer's task is to manage, coordinate and organize the engineering work for a project or group of projects at one or more locations. In many cases, this involves interacting with and coordinating activities of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and specialists in related disciplines. The project engineer is required to seek and obtain specific highly specialized engineering advice or expertise. The task also involves monitoring the activities of international and local contractors with regard to compliance with design standards, project specifications, schedule targets and quality requirements. The project engineer is expected to be committed to the HSE requirements applicable to the oil and gas industry. The project engineer's task is diverse and also includes' supporting and implementing project engineering and project management systems as well as engaging constructively with regulatory authorities,

Requirements

This responsible position requires a university-trained engineer in one of the main engineering disciplines such as civil, structural, mechanical, chemical, or process engineering. It is a job for an engineer with an established track record in various roles in engineering design and construction in the upstream oil/gas business. As well as engineering experience, demonstrated interpersonal and management skills are essential in this dynamic project environment, very often in an international setting.
