Introduction
The role of being a hydrographer is to deal and specialize in the precise positioning, data processing and data acquisition in marine or maritime environments. The candidate would need to understand and have experience in mapping and measuring the globe's underwater surfaces and detail the construction (or morphology) of the seabed.
Employers
The applicant would use the information from the morphological mapping to create charts, which would aid future navigation, locating of offshore resources such as gas, oil and aggregates, dredging and the planning of offshore installations such as oil rigs.
Responsibilities
Surveyors will be expected to work in an array of different environments and situations such as near shore waters and deep marine waters as well as ports and oceans. This would mainly depend on the candidate's specialism. A pro-active and caring officer is needed, as they would need to be environmentally aware. The daily work activities would normally include the use of specialized technical software including terrestrial and global positioning systems, echo sounders and sonar that would improve the production of nautical maps and charts. When producing the information, the hydrographer would use and manage the processing and presentation of that information to the clients. The interaction and dealing with offshore and on-shore clients is a very high priority for the role. When producing the reports, they must be highly accurate and reliable. The information could span over seabed mining, the construction of ports and gas and oil exploration.
Requirements
The applicant would be the number one communicator for those offshore and on-shore to enable the accurate information was sufficiently relayed back from the vessel. Aside from the daily focus of work, the candidate would be expected to review and solve any company or working problems and processes. By providing feedback on the processes, the efficiency can increase. As well as this, the feedback on in-house training programs and courses would be needed to make sure valid and relevant information was being taught to other fellow workers. The successful applicant must have HUET and BOSIT knowledge and relevant experience for the role. Those without BOSIT or HUET will not be successful in becoming selected.
