Mud engineer

One of the most common offshore jobs is that of Mud Engineer. A Mud Engineer is generally a college or technical school graduate, who has trained in a special course, known as “mud school”. Prior to drilling, a program is worked out in accordance to the projected geology. As the hole gets deeper, more and more mud is needed. The Mud Engineer is responsible for ensuring that it meets specifications. The chemical composition of the mud is designed not to destabilize the hole. It is often essential to totally alter the mud in order to drill through certain subsurface layers.
