Oil Spill Sydney Refinery Contained

2012-02-09 14:00:44 - Spill International
An oil spill at Shell's Clyde refinery in western Sydney, Australia, has been contained. An unknown amount of the petrol-based substance ran into Duck Creek about 4PM on 8th February 2012, after heavy rain caused the refinery's stormwater system to overflow. Containment booms were put in place and the area was diluted with fresh water and detergent.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said a Hazmat (Hazardous Material) team and workers from Sydney Ports helped Shell contain the spill overnight. The oil did not cause any damage and posed no risk to residents, he said. A Shell spokesman confirmed today that the oil had been cleaned up.

Recent heavy rainfall meant the stormwater overflow system was unable to contain all of the rain water, causing an overflow, a according to a Shell spokesperson. He added that the refinery responded as soon as we were made aware of the situation and quickly deployed oil spill clean-up equipment.
