Fellowship Programme in Marine Pollution Law

The World Maritime University (WMU), founded by and operated under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), inaugurates the INTERTANKO Ph.D. Fellowship Programme in Marine Pollution Law on 1st January 2012. The Fellowship Programme aims to develop and advance research into the growing trends of criminalising seafarers in marine pollution incidents and to examine whether such proceedings are in compliance with existing international law.
The curriculum includes topics such as the notion of criminal liability in marine pollution law; implementation of international conventions, namely UNCLOS and MARPOL, under domestic laws and the EU law; comprehensive analysis of existing judicial decisions relating to marine pollution incidents and effects and outcome of the criminalisation of seafarers.
The applicant is required to be resident at WMU in Malmö, Sweden, for the full duration of the Fellowship. Research under the will take place under supervision of a WMU faculty member and, if appropriate, together with external advisors.
