Costa Concordia May Turn into Spill Disaster

2012-01-16 15:28:44 - Spill International
On Friday evening 13th December 2012, the cruiseliner Costa Concordia grounded near the Italian island Giglio after hitting an underwater rock. The ship is not stable and moved on Monday 16th January 2012. Risk is she will sink to 100m depth. As the Costa Concordia is carrying fuel, the risk of a spill is realistic.

That risk would be serious as the fuel may sink into the soil of the sea bed. The area also is a popular touristic destination for divers.

Oil spill boom has been put in place to contain oil and fuel that may leak out of the damaged vessel. This hasn't been the case yet.

The Costa Concordia is carrying about 500,000 gallons of fuel in seventeen separate tanks.
