Admiral Thad Allen (United States Coast Guard, Retired) has been named as Senior Vice President at Booz Allen Hamilton, USA. Allen will join the firm's Justice and Homeland Security business and lead development of thought leadership and client engagement regarding the direction of law enforcement and Homeland Security, some 10 years after the events of 9/11.

Allen brings to Booz Allen experience as the head of a major homeland security agency (USCG), as well as an unequalled record at achieving operational effectiveness at the interagency level. In addition to his main focus in the homeland security market, Allen will contribute to other firm initiatives in energy, defence and international markets.

As Commandant of the Coast Guard and a Four-Star Admiral, Allen led an organisation comprised of 90,000 active-duty military, civilian staffers, reservists and volunteer auxiliaries. He led a major effort to update the Coast Guard's command and logistics organizations and address future maritime challenges. Allen worked very closely with the Department of Homeland Security, advancing much-needed operations and management coordination principles. He is recognised as a leader in homeland security strategy, with particular emphasis on achieving interagency unity of effort in the complex, multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional homeland security and law enforcement mission environment.

Upon his retirement as Commandant of the Coast Guard in May 2010, he continued to serve as the National Incident Commander for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as a member of the Senior Executive Service within DHS. Since leaving government service, Allen has been a senior fellow with RAND Corporation, where he focused on building resiliency in communities, disaster response, maritime safety and security, border security, maritime policy, defence support to civilian authorities, and information sharing. Allen will continue to serve as a Presidential appointee on the National Science Foundation's Blue Ribbon panel on Antarctica. He also serves as a director at the Partnership for Public Service and the Coast Guard Foundation.

Allen has a bachelor's degree from the Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Public Administration degree from The George Washington University, and a Masters Degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.
