The newest high-tec company to move into premises on Plymouth's Tamar Science Park (situated in Devon in the south-west of the UK) specialises in increasing the knowledge of the unseen landscape that exists beneath the surface of coastal waters around the world.

New Office for PelydrynPelydryn was founded by former UK National Hydrographer, Dr Wyn Williams, along with Peter Hobson who is now managing director of the company. Starting with just these two some 18 months ago, the company now employs fourteen staff.

Speaking for the company, Head of Corporate Development Katie Jones said to be delighted at the level of demand for Pelydryn's services. The company has had to grow rapidly to satisfy market demand. "The move to Tamar Science Park meets several criteria, not least of which is the synergy between other technology-based companies on the Park such as ARGANS with whom we've already been working. Plus Plymouth is the foremost hub of marine and maritime technologies in the UK, driven by the presence of the University and Navy."

Pelydryn was formed to enhance the data available on coastal zones in the UK and around the world. The main tool used by the company is Lidar, short for Light Detection And Ranging, a remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light rather than radio waves used by radar to find range and/or other information of a distant target. The system uses a laser mounted on a light aircraft and the resulting data contains incredibly accurate information about the hidden contours beneath the waves. When rendered into a three-dimensional graphic image, the results are stunning, revealing a landscape every bit as detailed and intricate as that on dry land.
