Poseidon wind farmThe initial phase of the Poseidon Atlantic project is to be located along the Atlantic coast in Northampton County, Virginia where a recently adopted ordinance allows test wind turbines with tip heights up to 228 metres. The facility is anticipated to provide a unique opportunity and location for certification testing of offshore-scale and large land wind turbines, and is anticipated to be the first facility where wind turbine generators proposed for offshore deployment can be erected and certified in the US.

The plans for the Poseidon Atlantic Wind Turbine Test Certification Center were jointly announced on 14th October 2011 by Poseidon Atlantic LLC, Governor Bob McDonnell of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington DC. The Poseidon Atlantic project is a collaboration of Real NewEnergy, Fugro and Ecofys, Dutch firms with American operating companies, with the backing and support of the Governor's office of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia Port Authority, and the Royal Netherlands Embassy.
