A 250kg bomb has been dredged up during maintenance works near Zeebrugge, Belgium. The Pearl River sucked up the bomb on 24th May 2011 at 3.30am. After warning the coastguard, it was decided the bomb should be taken into the port for inspection, as the sea state was too rough for authorities to board.
The Pearl River sailed towards the port of Zeebrugge after a safety zone was installed around the ship. Arrived behind the breakwaters the inspection took place and the bomb revealed to be from the Second World War, measuring 1m long and 40cm wide, weighing 250kg. As there was no detonation device, there was no risk. The bomb was taken off the ship to the mine destruction service in Poelkapelle.
