The 2nd Engineer is one who has sufficient technical knowledge of the DP system and would obtain a very attractive salary package for doing so. Career progression would lead up to being Chief Engineer and eventually Chief Engineer no limitation or unlimited.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The role includes being responsible for referring and accountability to the 1st Engineer or Chief Engineer. This could be the daily operational or maintenance of the propulsion equipment of the engine rooms in accordance to the planned maintenance and operational procedures. In shipping terms, the role would be to act as the engineering officer in charge of watching the engine's <3000KW and assisting the integration and training of fitters and engine-room workers in the department. The candidate would ensure the procedural events take place and be pro-active with their contribution to the production and development of work plans. This Engineer would deal with vessels of <3000KW and assist the Chief Engineer in the Master's Review, which is always in line with the ISM code. Additionally, the role would be in accordance to maritime and shipping laws within Flag State regulations.

Requirements

The skills that are required to be successful are to have the 2nd Engineer certificate or unlimited according to the STCW95. Knowledge of the DP system is vital as is having detailed knowledge of international rules and standards. The applicant must have sufficient knowledge of a ship's management SMS and a wide experience and knowledge of offshore operations. The need to recognize the Seaman's discharge book is imperative as is having an up to date and valid medical certificate. The role needs a person who has completed a current offshore survival course, especially if it is BOSIET, which would need to include HUET. The applicant must be highly motivated, a good team player and have similar detailed experience.
